Items Every Dog-Parent should have at Home

Guest post by Gina

Being a dog-parent for the past 5 years has been an experience. Harley and I have been through it all, the late-night run to the emergency department for intestinal gastritis, having two cruciate ligament surgeries on her back leg twelve months apart.

The stress levels have been out of this world, and I’ve learnt that there are a few items that are essential to have at home.

Items Every Dog-Parent should have at Home

  • First aid kit
  • Emergency records
  • Flea and tick treatments
  • Dental aids
  • Grooming supplies

First-Aid Kit
Having a dog first aid kit at home could help save your dog’s life. Every dog owner should have one in their own home. You can put together your own first aid kit, or you can buy a complete package from your local pet store.

Having a dog specific antibacterial cream is a must-have. Harley occasionally gets scratched by sticks on her stomach from playing, and it’s handy to use to keep the scratches from getting infected. You can only purchase this cream from your vet as it is a prescription.

Emergency Records
Having records at hand in case of emergency means one less thing to worry about when your dog is sick. You can download your FREE Dog Bundle Pack from

A printable Dog-friendly human foods list
A printable 6-page Pet Record and Information Pack that includes:

  • Pet Record sheet
  • Pet Sitter Information Sheet
  • Medication sheet
  • Vaccination Records Sheet
  • Flea, Tick & Worm Treatment Schedule
  • Contacts Sheet

These sheets have been created to be easily printed so you can stick on the fridge, give to pet sitters, family members, friends and your vet.

Flea, tick and Worming Treatments
Trying to remember flea, tick and worming can be a hassle, having a calendar will help keep track of treatments and when they are needed. Many vets send text reminders of when it’s time for worming treatment. Give your vet a call to find out if they provide this service for you.

Dental Aids
Getting into a routine of using a toothbrush and dog toothpaste will help fight plaque and keep your dog’s gums nice and healthy.

Tip: I found that when it’s time to clean my teeth before bed, I will also do Harley’s teeth.

Grooming Supplies
Keeping your dog groomed, especially the nails is essential. This depends on the breed of dog as you may not need the extras such as shaver and conditioner. On average a dog’s nails should be clipped every 6-8 weeks. Have a chat with your vet as to what is best suited to your dog specifically.

Harley will have a professional groom at her vet approximately 5-8 times a year, in between those times I will groom Harley myself by giving her a shave and clip. Once a week I’ll provide Harley with a bath with a natural shampoo followed by conditioner and a blow-dry. Harley loves the blow-dryer.

Grooming Kit

  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Nail clippers
  • Pet Shaver
  • Brush

Having these items in your home will be invaluable, I don’t know how many times I reach for these items and I must say it takes out the stress, worry and annoyance when needing these items. When you use an item be sure to replace it asap so when you need it again it will be there. We all hate those moments of ‘I wish had this now’.

Gina & Harley

Gina is an enthusiastic dog lover, so much so that she founded her own dog blog business called PawLife, which has been awarded top 10 Australian Dog Blog. This wouldn’t be possible without her best friend Harley, who is a toy poodle mix. They are continually going on new adventures, testing out new squeaky toys.

Gina recently discovered her writing passion and wanted to create the ultimate guidebook that would support, educate and inspire pet parents and yet to be pet parents around the world. Gina and Harley are originally from Australia, where the weather is always beautiful. This is Gina’s first book and looks forward to writing many more to help fellow pet-parents; with her fur-baby Harley by her side.
